WATER SYSTEM TESTS FOR USE IN AN ISO SURVEY

The hydrant distribution and water flow of the water system(s) used by the fire department will be surveyed and tested in the same manner as would be accomplished during an ISO survey. In addition, flow rates will be gathered from other selected fire hydrant locations. The hydrants tested (flowed) will be located in the vicinity of high Needed Fire Flow buildings, and other tests selected will be at locations used to determine the over-all capability of the entire water system(s) to provide fire suppression water supply within the graded area. The latest Needed Fire Flow report (formerly termed the Batch Report) for the area of department coverage can be obtained from the ISO office in Marlton, NJ.

Information from the fire department will be used if available; this can also comprise water flow tests previously made by any agency, or contractor, of the local government and/or the flow tests made by ISO personnel during their last survey.

The Needed Fire Flow Report is needed, as will be the Hydrant Flow Data Summary sheet (HFDS); this sheet was “made” by ISO during their first survey and will be used in all future surveys of your graded area as it relates to the listed test site locations. This sheet was forwarded to the government entity by ISO as part of their completed results from any survey of your graded area. The HFDS, and the included “limited by” notations, is used to calculate the 35 point sub-item score (Item 616) in the Water Supply section of the Rating Schedule, as was indicated above.

IF you have never had an ISO survey (for the purpose of receiving a class 8 or lower classification), the Needed Fire Flow report, as well as a hydrant map with main sizes of the area to be graded, can be used and I will create a HFDS report for the area, which I have had to do in some surveys.

This report, as well as the HFDS sheet (if it cannot be located) can be requested by phone, or by letter signed by the Chief and on department letterhead stationery. Request same stating the area of coverage (City of …. / County of ……, A)

Your return packet will come from ISO at 545 Washington Blvd, Jersey City, NJ. Based on present situations, I would advise a call then a FAX. Also plan on calling back if you have not received anything in 2-3 weeks.
